Dark Whys
Why do we do what we do? And when we can’t be bothered, what can get us to do something?
Motivation
Motivation is different for everyone. At our core, we are either scared of something or looking for a reward. Neither is wrong, but once we know which works better for us, we can be more effective at influencing others.
Purpose
When we look at our internal motivation, we also either avoid pain or chase pleasure.
According to Simon Sinek, when we know our why we find our purpose. Our whys are what will get us through the hard times. Having a sense of purpose helps us focus on our goals when things get difficult.
Generally, our why’s are good whys.
- I exercise so that my cholesterol doesn’t do more damage to my health.
- I write because I enjoy it, and it satisfies me.
Sometimes our whys are vain and selfish.
But sometimes, we do things for less favourable reasons. I follow a Youtuber, and he shared what he calls Dark Whys. These are the less than honourable reasons we do something. So, for example, I exercise to be fit and healthy. But it is also so I can beat my friend in a race.
