Eat the mountain one spoon at a time!
I know this metaphor is incorrect. I found it funny, and it still makes sense — at least to me, it does.
I was talking to my buddy-mentor about how we can tackle a seemingly insurmountable task. We often see our problems as mountains. We must climb them to get to the other side. When we first look at them, we can feel overwhelmed and that the challenge is too much.
This can lead to us giving up before we even begin. When we look at it in its entirety, we feel that we don’t have the skills, energy, or motivation to start.
This is where we need to understand that small changes can have an enormous impact. If you start small but do it consistently, you can achieve a lot.
This is a lot like saving for retirement when you are young. You don’t see the necessity of it - once you reach the mountain, it’s too late. If you can put aside a small amount for a long time, you will be surprised how much you can save.
I took some time off over Christmas and the New Year. When I needed to get myself motivated and back to work, I felt overwhelmed with all that was on my to-do list. I would get to the end of the day, feeling like I hadn’t achieved anything.
