How to improve your self-awareness
What is it?
Self-awareness is the ability to understand the impact of your behaviour on those around you. When we interact with colleagues, clients and stakeholders, they react to what we say and do. If we have low self-awareness, we can miss out on cues that can modify our behaviour. We judge our impact on those we interact with at the workplace.
For example, suppose we are delivering a sales presentation. Our audience is not reacting in the way that we hoped. In that case, we can ask questions that will help us to uncover where the disconnect is happening.
Why is it important?
Self-awareness helps us to navigate our environment better and to work effectively with others.
People with low self-awareness don’t understand how their behaviour can negatively or positively impact others.
If we don’t have this, then we can’t moderate our behaviour.
You can’t change what you can’t name. When we don’t know what we are feeling or why then we can’t take appropriate measures.
How can I develop it?
The first step is to check in with yourself. You can do this in several ways.
Journaling — daily or task-based journaling can help us to understand what we are working on…
