What are values?

Values are the standard for which we hold ourselves accountable.

If I say that I value exercise, but I don’t do any physical activity, there is a disconnect. People will hold different standards as being more critical.

For example, autonomy versus compliance. Neither is inherently good or bad. Which one we value will be determined by:

  • personality
  • family
  • societal influence

How do we identify what our values are?

We can determine what our values are by what we do consistently.

If what we are doing energises us and can get into a state of flow, we can live our values.

There are self-assessments available that can help you to identify what your fundamental values are.

Why should we live them?

When we know what our values are, we can determine if we are living them. I attended a webinar on this, which was helpful.

If we live our values, then we are energised and motivated.

There is a sense of achievement when we accomplish a task that relates to our values.
