Routines are overrated

I have read with interest several stories about morning routines recently on Medium. I have enjoyed them, and they have got me thinking about my own lack of a pattern in the morning.

I get up at a different time most days. I sometimes don’t shower till late in the day, or I shower before breakfast. If I eat breakfast, it’s always at a different time of day. I never start my workday at the same time, and each day tends to look quite different from the previous and next day.

Variety is the spice of life

I’m ok with this. I like the lack of structure and fluidity of my week. There is some pattern within the absence of routine. There is consistency in the inconsistent, and I work well within it without getting bored.

Thursday will look a bit like Monday in that I’ll get up at 5:30 and ride, and then Friday I’ll be riding long, so I will likely get up around 6 am, but I won’t be home until 10:30 am.

Because each of my days starts at a different time depending on the activity planned — what follows when I get home will be slightly different. What follows is contingent on if I stopped for a…
