I have been asked to give a talk about relationship skills. After 22 years of marriage, I think I have plenty to contribute.

No marriage/relationship is easy. It takes communication, caring and willingness to compromise to stay together. You both need to be committed to making the relationship work. Over the course of time I have been married, many of my friends have separated. The reasons for the breakdown have always been multifaceted. Interesting, very few are purely down to infidelity.

One of the reasons I believe my husband and I have been together so long is that we still like each other. We can have a good natter and chuckle even if this doesn’t happen a lot. As working parents with teenage children, we can often go days without a meaningful conversation. I guess that both of us are happy with this is also a reason for being together. Having similar levels of needs means we don’t get resentful if we don’t say much for a few days.

There is no secret to success

I don’t believe there is a secret to staying together. Date nights will not fix a broken relationship. Counselling will only work if you are both invested in staying together.
