Getting things done in small bursts
Since getting out of the hospital, I have felt overwhelmed by my house and the number of tasks I needed to get done each day. It hasn’t helped that I’ve had a cold and paid work to fit into my day.
Today was the first day I had the energy and motivation to do things. However, I also knew that I needed to balance that with giving my body some rest. I am still improving, and pushing myself too hard today could stall my recovery.
Making Balance the Priority
I set the following parameters to balance my need to get things done and my need to rest and recuperate.
What completed tasks would at the end of the day would make me the happiest?
The items on my list were that the dinner would be cooked and ready to serve at 6:30 pm. It needed eight hours in the slow cooker, I had to finish preparation by 12:30 pm.
I wanted the kitchen and lounge room to be tidied and vacuumed so I could relax in them.
Timed Activities
I then alternated between sitting on the couch and journalling, editing, or watching TV with small bursts of activity. I moved my body about every thirty to forty minutes for five to fifteen minutes. By four p.m., I…
