When Was the Last Time You Had Fun?

It might be time for some creativity.

In a recent coaching conversation, I asked a client the above question. They looked at me blankly for some time, then replied they couldn't remember.

They're not alone in their response. For some time now, I've been thinking about creativity, a growth mindset, and being an adult. The older I get, the more challenging I find it is to do things for fun. To do something I'm bad at, to risk failure. To make a mess and be less than perfect.

There are several apparent reasons for this response, and I hope to offer some suggestions on breaking free from our expectations.

Which brings me to reason one.

The weight of our expectations

The longer we adult, the more weight of responsibility we tend to assume. I have teenage children transitioning out of my house and into adulthood and aging parents with health challenges.

My husband and I are looking towards retirement, so between concern for our kids, parents and finances, it is challenging to be silly, frivolous and irresponsible.

This year, I wanted to do some creative pursuits. Now, for me, that's been writing, painting and knitting. The following are what gets in my way of doing…
