Why I Needed To Find A New Hobby

It’s time to slow down and listen to my body.

After a thirty-year break, I recently took up knitting again. I did it for several reasons, which I’ll share here, but what led me to start was the result of some self-reflection.

This year, I have become aware of three behaviours I consistently display that, if not adequately managed, are not always the healthiest.

My Problematic Behaviours

  • I have an all-or-nothing mindset, and so I struggle for consistency. I can get very obsessed with a task and exhaust myself before I finish the activity.
  • I need to be productive in everything and, as a result, can find it challenging to sit still and do nothing.
  • Finally, if I’m not careful, I can get pulled into multiple directions at once, doing nothing of value until I catch myself and do the most important thing, not all the things at once.

During my recent hospital stay, I realised that rapid task shifting doesn’t help me stay healthy. This experience made me realise the importance of slowing down and relaxing. I have conditioned myself to do two things simultaneously, but I know I must take a break and unwind.

Working with who I am, not who I want to be
