I recently read an article on this exact topic. I found it interesting and informative, and I realised I have been utilising this process for several years now. I deliver training on various subjects, and I use writing to help me to solidify my thinking.

Solidify thinking and organise ideas

Often I have done a lot of research and have many different ideas and thoughts on a topic. To help me sort through all the information in my head, sitting down and writing out what I want to share will allow me to corral and then organise my thoughts.

Brain download

I start by pretty much doing a brain download. I don't worry too much about structure or logic. My first pass is just a stream of consciousness, and I don't worry about whether it makes sense or where I am going with this.

Once I have done my brain dump, I do a basic edit. I can't handle the underlines, so I simply accept the corrections as I go as I do my first read-through.

Headers and organisation

Depending on how much I put in headers and identify where bullet points should go.

Fill in the gaps
